Waste project in Thisted Kommune is to prepare local companies for future requirements

The amount of waste that is being recycled must go up. That is the future requirements for waste sorting for small amd mid-sized businesses in Denmark, and the goal for Thisted Kommunes waste project.

As a part of Thisted Kommunes Energy and Resourcepolicy, the municipality has initiated an experimental project in Hanstholm, for the furation november 2015 to may 2016. The purpose is to increase the amount of sorted waste from small ame mid-sized businesses. The starting point for the project is the fact, that these businesses today have a hard time sorting their waste. At the same time these companies has a desire to become better at sorting waste.

14 companies was asked if they wanted to participate, and 11 companies said yes. For the remaining tree companies,  it either was not relevant or else they was already sorting their waste.

At the end of the project the practical experiences will be summarized and the participating companies will have a comprehensive briefing.

Waste is a resource

In Thisted Kommune they are used to see waste as a resource, when waste since 1978 has been the corner stone in Thisted city central heating. In the future there will be an increased focus on  recycling waste as the environmental requirements increase. The increased focus on recycling meant in 2014, that Denmark imported 250.000 tonnes of waste.* The former government has a goal that 70% of all paper and pastic waste should be recycled.**

In the experimental period there will be placed two recycling containers at each business. One container for plastic and one container for paper. The expectation is, that waste containers will reduce the amount of waste for incineration by 30%. Experiences from a similar project in Morsø Kommune is backing this expectation. The amount of waste is very industry-specific. and the companies that is participating in this project if ranging from carpenters and masonry to consultants and fishermen.

Preparation for the future

The goal is to create a model, that can be used for small and mid-sized businesses within Thisted Kommune, at the same time the companies are prepared to the increased requirements for handling waste.

It has not been difficult to get participants for the project, since the companies are very conscious about the fact that increased requirements are commine. At the same time it is significant, how much the consideration for the environment is motivating the involved companies. As long as the waste handling project was created so it does not affect the companys competitiveness, the businesses are ready to participate.

Crazy about energy trips in Thy

Based on multiple requests from the national orgainsation the local Engineers Association (IDA) Thy Mors, arranged a guidet energy tour in Thy for the Associations members in Northern Jutland. The seats were quickly sold out, and to accomany the many interested a second tour was arranged.

The program was a visit at The National Test Center for Large Windmills in Østerild, where the guests, in bus, came up close with the giant wind mills. Afterwards the tour proceeded to Frøstrup Kro, where they could enjoy the supper before the subsequent tour in the demonstration house Energy Point Frøstrup.

On the two tours a total of 87 guests participated, out of these 1/3 of them was local members, where as the latter came from other parts of Northern Jutland. Some even came all the way from Funen to experience the energy in Thy. Leif Amby from IDA ThyMors is really pleased for the huge interest, there has been for the tours. – I hope, that we get more of this kind of arrangements in the future – says Leif Amby and continues – we will work on getting more of this, and as we also hear from our members there is a request to give the arrangement even more professionel density.

Great success with energy screenings of local companies in Thisted Kommune

In cooperation with independent energy advisers Thisted Kommune now offers energy screenings to local companies. The goal is to create 25 screenings every year from 2015 to 2018, and this year the goal has been achieved.

The initiative is a part of Thisted Kommunes Energy- and resource policy, and in 2016 a new round of screenings will be opened. At IdealCombi A/S in Hurup Thy they have accepted the offer of an energy screening of their production facilities, which has an area of 100.000 m2.

SRT Energirådgivning found energy savings for 850 MW, which equals 40 houses yearly energy consumption. IdealCombis products are amongst the absolute most energi efficient in the market, and that is why they want to take lead and reduce their own energy consumption in the production, says the Director Mikael Søgaard from IdealCombi and continues: – Our environment politics are constantly being revised and optimized, this ensure that we continually are creating a reduced energy consumption and a reduced load on the environment. Having an energy efficient production also sends a green signal to our customers and makes certain that our production is competitive and creates Danish jobs.

Qualified and independant energy advice

We know, that there are many companies, that can benefit from an energy screening an achieve a better financial situation, says the owner of SRT Energirådgivning Simon Rude Thøgersen and continues: – And by using an independent energy adviser, the companies achieves the highest subsidy, since the energy adviser decides which energi company the savings should be sold to.
The purpose is not to sell particular products or solutions, but to solely advise which savings they can achieve by following the directions. It is entirely up to the company as to which degree they want to implement the recommendations, depending on which is a better fit into the company strategy, says business consultant in Thisted Kommune Peter Brandt Larsen and continues: – By going through with the energy renovations the companies achieves a reduction of their energy expenses, which in turn gives a better bottom line and a competitive advantage. Further more the green investments create jobs for local contractors, Peter Brandt Larsen finishes. After the financial crisis focus has been shifted to focus on expenses, and many companies have discovered that there are much to save through energy optimising.

The banks also looks positively on potential loans for energy improvements in the company, especially when the profitability is well documentet in an energy report.

90.000 DKK! This is the amount Områdecenter Solgården is saving each year on leasing a single electrical car.

On Områdecenter Solgården they are running the project “Natugleordningen”. That means that Solgården, to nursing homes and a living facility in the area are sharing a mobile night shift. Previously the night shift had to use his own private car for the night shift. Today they have a more economical approach. A leased electrical car.

It was Elisa Hove, administrative associate in Solgården, who had the idea to lease the electrical car.

Green heat in Hanstholm

September 19 Hanstholm Varmeværk A.m.b.a initiated their new wood chip facility, that replaces the use of bio oil. Now the heat is primarily being producted by wood chips, the surplus heat from Hanstholm Fiskemelsfabrik and from an electrical boiler powered by wind mills. Only during high load do they take their nature gas powered boilers and engines into use..

In Hanstholm the first central heating facility was established in 1965, and a lot has happened since. In 1994 there was established a Power plant, now both power and heating could be produced.

During the latest yeats a lot of investments has been made in a wide variety of production facilities, so that they today has a central heating facility that produces environmental friendly CO2-neutral and cheap heat with a high reliability. The facility delivers heat for Hanstholm city and Ræhr city. The power is delivered to Thy-Mors Energi.

The wood chips for the new furnace are coming from Thy, and Hanstholm Fiskemelsfabrik delivers the surplus heating for the central heating production. A very good story about local cooperation that is something that is very characteristic about Thy.

In total the project yields both a reduction of the heating facilitys costs for producing heat as well as there is an environmental benefit in the facilitys productionapparatus is being replaced with a new and cleaner technology. Projects like this has a positive influence on the total CO2 numbers in Thisted Kommune, as well as increasing the settlement in the Northers part of the Kommune. Low prices on heating and environmental proper production also means something when you need to find a new place to live.
